Detailed Installation Guide
1. Prepare the Subfloor:
Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. If it's concrete, make sure it's properly cured (at least 90 days) and free of moisture or excessive alkalinity.
2. Lay the Vapor Barrier:
Unroll the 6-mil poly film over the entire subfloor. Overlap seams by at least 6 inches and seal them with moisture-resistant tape.
3. Install the Flooring:
Follow the flooring manufacturer's instructions for installing the chosen flooring type (vinyl, SPC, laminate, or WPC) directly on top of the vapor barrier.
4. Consider Additional Underlayment:
Some flooring types, like SPC, may benefit from an additional underlayment for sound dampening and comfort, especially if the flooring doesn't already have an attached underlayment.
Why is a Vapor Barrier Needed?
Concrete Subfloors:
Concrete can release moisture (moisture vapor) over time, which can damage floating floors, especially if they are not properly protected.
Moisture Protection:
The vapor barrier acts as a barrier, preventing moisture from the subfloor from reaching the flooring and causing issues like buckling, swelling, or discoloration.
Flooring Stability:
By preventing moisture from accumulating, the vapor barrier helps maintain the stability and integrity of the flooring.
Warranty:
Some flooring manufacturers require the use of a vapor barrier for warranty purposes.
